Norfolk, VA (SportsNetwork.com) – There’s no doubt Bethune-Cookman is followed
by the letter “D”.
Bethune-Cookman defensive lineman Rony Barrow was a part of two fourth-quarter
safeties and the 20th-ranked Wildcats held Norfolk State to 67 yards of offense
for a 13-7 victory in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Thursday night.
The battle of the two top defenses in the MEAC – and two of the top three in
the nation – lived up to its billing as Bethune-Cookman (8-2, 5-1) broke a
five-way tie atop the conference. The Spartans fell to 4-6 and 4-2.
Barrow and Ty’re Simmons tackled NSU’s Aaron Daniel in the end zone for a
safety to give Bethune-Cookman an 8-7 lead early in the fourth quarter. After
Ben Noboa licked a 24-yard field goal with 10:25 left, Barrow and David Perry
combined on another safety when they trapped quarterback Terrance Ervin in the
end zone at the 1:21 mark.
An interception by linebacker Deon King set up NSU’s only touchdown in the
first quarter – a 16-yard scoring pass from Ervin to Chris Lee.
Bethune-Cookman pulled within 7-6 midway through the second quarter on Quentin
Williams’ 23-yard pass to Jhomo Gordon, but the Wildcats missed the PAT.
Bethune-Cookman had 217 yards of offense.
