East Rutherford, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) – New York Giants wide receiver Victor
Cruz underwent successful surgery Monday to repair the torn patellar tendon in
his right knee.
Cruz is out for the rest of the season after suffering the injury in the third
quarter of Sunday night’s 27-0 loss to the Eagles.
Facing a 20-0 deficit early in the third stanza, the Giants decided to go for
it on 4th-and-goal from the 3. Cruz dropped what would have been a touchdown
before grabbing his right knee. The gruesome injury brought tears to Cruz’s
eyes as he was carted off the field.
Giants coach Tom Coughlin was optimistic about Cruz bouncing back.
“Knowing Victor, he’ll jump into that rehab as hard as he can go,” said
Coughlin on Monday.
Cruz caught 23 passes for 337 yards and one touchdown in six games this
season. In 14 games last year, he hauled in 73 passes for 998 yards and four
scores.
The 27-year-old Cruz spent Sunday night at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia
and was transferred to the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, where
team physician Dr. Russell Warren performed the procedure.
The Giants hope that rookie Odell Beckham Jr. and Rueben Randle can fill the
void. Preston Parker replaced Cruz in the slot Sunday night.
Coughlin also said that cornerback Trumaine McBride will have surgery on his
thumb. Fellow cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie left Sunday’s game with
back spasms.
