Lions sign former Broncos K Prater

Allen Park, MI (SportsNetwork.com) – Hoping to find some consistency at the
position, the Detroit Lions signed former Pro Bowl kicker Matt Prater on
Tuesday.

Prater, who was released by the Denver Broncos last week after serving a four-
game suspension, will be Detroit’s third kicker already this season.

The Lions (3-2) cut rookie Nate Freese after Week 3 and released former
Philadelphia kicker Alex Henery on Monday after he missed three field goal
attempts in a 17-14 loss to Buffalo.

Prater, 30, missed just one of his 26 attempts last season and set an NFL
record with a 64-yard field goal against Tennessee in December.

He spent the last six-plus seasons with Denver but was suspended for violating
the league’s substance-abuse policy, reportedly over alcohol-related offenses.

Prater has made 142 of 174 attempts in 96 career games, including two with the
Atlanta Falcons at the beginning of his career.
